When just opened, men’s basketball team Providence Friars was the only tenant of the venue. They played nearly all their games there since 1972. Also, men's basketball team of the University of Rhode Island as well as women's basketball team of Providence played some of their game in the arena. The hockey team Rhode Island Reds that was formerly known as Providence Reds started played their games in the venue between1972 to 1977.

In 1992, the AHL team Providence Bruins started playing in Dunkin' Donuts Center. For 1988 season, the arena football team New England Steamrollers took the venue as their home. Other major events have taken place in the arena including for instance some preseason games of the NBA teams Boston Celtics and Harlem Globetrotters. The venue also hosted some collegiate tournaments as it is the case with men's basketball tournament Big East Conference in 1980.

In addition to many other sports events including WWE tours, the venue has hosted several other non sports events such as concerts of big artists. For example Led Zeppelin band performed in the arena in 1973. Half of Grateful Dead band’s 1974 album Dick's Picks Volume 12 has been recorded in the venue. In 2011, Taylor Swift stopped by the arena twice, once as part of her Speak Now World Tour and the other in her Red Tour. As part of her Bangerz Tour, Miley Cyrus is performing at the arena in 2014.
